Nicola Slater, who has been a pivotal figure at Superdry, has stepped down from her role as head of global sourcing, ethical and sustainability after three transformative years. Her departure, reported by Drapers, marks a significant transition as she embarks on a new chapter as a freelance consultant.
Joining Superdry in November 2020, Slater quickly rose through the ranks—first as head of sourcing and, by July 2021, she was leading efforts in global sourcing, ethics, and sustainability. Her expertise and dedication were apparent, especially in a retail landscape that increasingly demands transparency and ethical practices.
Before her tenure at Superdry, Slater made her mark at Al-Futtaim in Dubai, serving as head of buying from late 2017 to mid-2019. This role not only honed her skills in international retail but also deepened her understanding of sourcing products responsibly in a complex global market.
Her career also spans a significant tenure at Marks and Spencer in Shanghai, China, where she led buying and merchandising from mid-2016 to late 2017, following her earlier position as buying manager from 2013 to 2016. This global exposure provided her with a nuanced perspective on consumer trends and the challenges facing the fashion industry worldwide.
Earlier this year, Slater was part of the team that relaunched Superdry’s Cult sub-brand, reflecting the company’s commitment to innovation and adaptation. With a dedicated website and a revitalized presence in flagship stores on Oxford Street and White City, the brand aims to resonate with the next generation, showcasing fresh designs that align with modern consumer values.
Notably, Superdry’s relaunch comes on the heels of its delisting from the London Stock Exchange last year, a move that was indicative of its ongoing strategic evolution. The company described the Cult relaunch as a response to shifting market trends and a desire to appeal to younger shoppers keen on trendy, sustainable fashion.
As Slater embarks on her consulting journey, her wealth of experience in ethical sourcing and sustainability will undoubtedly influence the numerous brands and initiatives she engages with. For those following her journey, it represents a beacon of potential, as the fashion industry continues to navigate the complexities of sustainability in an increasingly conscious world.
